The seaplane training base at Lee-on-Solent was opened in July 1917 and was an extension to the existing base at Calshot. When the RFC and RNAS combined in 1918 the base become an RAF base and in April 1924 the based became part of the newly established Fleet Air Arm.

In the early days of the base pilots would train in Bristol Bailey Seaplanes or Short 184/225 Seaplanes.
